This field is being publicized on certain television programs where they tend to embellish certain facts, and sometimes tend to glamorize the job. This field demands an individual who has a strong desire for detail and analytical skills, as well as being able to deal with the patient who has gone through a very traumatic event.

Another very good area is working as a legal nurse consultant, where you advise and help attorneys prepare their lawsuit cases of medical malpractice as a plaintiff. This position requires an experienced RN who is very familiar with hospital routine and many medical procedures and terms, and also knows how a hospital deals with a malpractice occurrence. In addition to working with attorneys, a legal nurse consultant is employed by an insurance carrier to help them prepare their defense. As you might imagine, this position can be quite lucrative if you are well experienced. Many legal nurse consultants command an hourly rate of $150.00, plus they have the freedom to work with whom they choose.

If you enjoy travel, and don’t mind the stress of moving from place to place every few months, then perhaps becoming a travel nurse may appeal to you. The demand for travel nurses is very high in the US due to the shortage of permanent staff Rn’s, and you can pretty much write your own ticket as the saying goes. There are many travel nurse agencies who are very eager to find you a position in just about any state, and the benefits they offer, are hard to beat. Normally, you get a bonus if you work the required period, free housing, insurance, travel & license reimbursement, plus a higher salary than what is paid to a permanent staff nurse. In addition to working in the US, often times you have the option to work in foreign countries, or even on a cruise ship.

We have mentioned above only three of the less popular nursing fields. In addition to those, there are the more well known areas such as pediatric, general nursing, dental, surgical nurses, and also the family nurse practitioner who works with individuals on matters of nutrition and other health concerns. Advanced degrees are generally required for the nurse practitioner, however, their earning potential is also higher.

If you are already an RN, you have many options available to you to consider, if you want or need a change. If you still are thinking about becoming a registered nurse, you should seriously consider this rewarding profession if you have the desire to care for individuals and have the temperament and personality to succeed.
