Become A Nurse

When considering becoming a nurse practitioner, there are many areas you might want to choose to go into. This type of nursing falls under one of four categories of an advanced practice nurse, and individuals generally have earned their masters degree. They then have gone on to complete more extensive training, based on the specific area they have chosen to go into. At one time, an NP was thought of as a substitute for the physician, however, they are now recognized as being able to offer a skilled approach to nursing, in their own rights. They can look at and interpret the results of any diagnostic or laboratory tests and can write prescriptions for treatments and medications on their own merit.

There are numerous different options for work fields and high job availability as in the legal nurse field. You may choose to specialize in:

• Acute care nursing

• Working solely with adults in adult medicine

• Go into community health care

• Family nursing

• Home health care

• Occupational health

• Pediatric health care

These are of course just a few chosen from the vast areas that you might want to look into more deeply when choosing to go into this type of nursing program.

So how do I become a nurse practitioner?

A degree is of course a requirement when you are considering becoming a nurse practitioner. You would need to hold a bachelor’s degree, which takes four years to earn, and you can then build on this. The type of program you would be looking at would depend on whether or not you actually have a master’s degree in another area. If so, you might want to find more information on post-masters certificate programs. A national certificate examination is offered by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and it is this certificate that you need to hold to go into the practitioner section of nursing. Once you have this you can then choose which sector you wish to specialize in and find a job within that sector. More and more hospitals are hiring nurse practitioners as they are a more cost effective approach to patient treatment.
